A Day Like Winter is a dark techno outfit based out of Stoke-on-Trent. I’d worked with the artist on various audio and visual projects over the years and they gave me a shout when they were ready for a logo design.
They were already a fan of the artwork I’d produced for Krupskaya and my general use of high contrast, black and white in some of my other illustrations.
Their specifications were very simple; give me a logo which is cold, dirty but also sharp and clear. They wanted it to be rough round the edges like something worn down by nature, but not at the expense of being bold and clear.
The artist was super happy with the result, confident that it effectively captured the cold, sharp feel of winter while still maintaining a rustic, urban vibe.
Their satisfaction with the project instigated a follow up to produce cover artwork for their first release.
A concept for the cover had already been established, they just wanted someone to bring it to life with their own perspective. I took the rough sketch I was provided alongside the thematic notes and essentially photobashed relevant imagery into the final result.
I really enjoy this type of work, especially when it gets to such a point that I can focus on the details. After the basic composition was signed off, I invested further time into incorporating objects and textures that were both thematically, and symbollic relevant to the story of the music.
